Several aspects of the facultatively monogamous social organization of gibbons are still unclear. To clarify them, I present data from a wild siamang (Symphalangus syndactylus) population, addressing the proximate mechanisms allowing males to peacefully coexist in the same group; how social challenges correlate with male testosterone levels; the evolutionary pressure of infanticide in this taxon; community-level communicative networks.
