Birds are a particularly interesting group to explore form ~ function relations in an evolutionary context. Despite having a rather homogeneous body plan and organization they occupy a wide diversity of ecological niches. Through several focused projects, the Aviform research program, explores the functional traits of birds in conjunction with their morphological diversity to better understand their exceptional species richness and ecological diversity.

AviNeck ''The head of the birds is extraordinarily mobile and allows them to use the beak like humans use their hands, in a variety of contexts ranging from food manipulation over the manipulation of other objects, preening, drinking etc. This project funded by the ANR associates roboticist from the IRCyN in Nantes and biologists from the MNHN,  the university of Montpellier and of the University of Madrid. It aims to better understand the functional morphology of the bird neck, its role in the evolution of this group of animals and to apply it to improve robots"

Aviforme .

Aviforme The proportions of the skeleton of over 100 species of birds are being analyzed to better understand the functional modularity intrinsic to the bird skeleton.

Hoatzin project''. (Col M.-A.

Hoatzin project A collaboration with colleagues of the IVIC in Venezuela  allowed us to film the behavior of this strange bird and to show that the nestlings use their wings as we use our hands to climb in the vegetation.https://advances.sciencemag.org/content/5/5/eaat0787    tTe study of the anatomy of this unusual bird  allowed us to better understand the unique morphological adaptations in relation to the behavior of this species (low mobility, folivory) Fanny Pages PhD project''

Some past projects

KIWI a study of female kiwi locomotion  gravid or not, to analyze the morphological trade off between reproduction and locomotion.   doi/full/10.1111/joa.13072

Avifeet ( col.

Avifeet Analysis of the morphological adaptations of birds' feet according to their lifestyle and living environment. http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/joa.12614/abstract)  In this project, we showed how the proportions of the phalanges of the birds' fingers adapt to the size and orientation of the support. We also observed that the skin participates in the efficiency of the claw formed by the foot of perching birds. The interpretation of these results highlights the participation of different morphogenetic pathways during development.

Bird bipedy Birds fly, but they walk, swimm, take off and land thanks to their hindlimbs. This project detailled the adaptations which permit locomotion in all the Earth environments.

In mammals, motor coordination changes drastically when they accelerate from trot to canter. This work has made it possible to highlight the desynchronization-resynchronization mechanism of the foreleg and hind leg pairs. It also allowed a new interpretation of the organization of coordination at the level of the spinal motor centers.
